Skeleton Throne
Ohio University Mainstage -2020
To ensure the scale this chair accurately dwarfed a 6’2” performer, I hung my brown paper on the wall and drew the piece out full scale vertically. The throne base was a welded box tube frame with a simple faux tufting in red velvet. I then pulled apart six plastic skeletons and began to bend and weld rod into the general shapes I wanted the skeletons to hold. Frequently I would need to slide pieces inside the plastic frames and then work with them freehand before welding them to other sections - so while I had to have a lot of forethought in the order in which things were assembled, flexibility and responsive problem-solving were the only way to succeed. I then used a variety of cast and carved bones to dress the base and any large negative spaces before applying a toning and distressing layer over all the bones to unify the colors and look.
