Stage Combat Cuttlefish

Stage Combat Fish Project – Hand Props

Ohio University  – 2018

Teacher: Tom Fiocchi

The entire fish is carved from a block of upholstery foam. Because all the tentacles go different directions, and because the piece was so wide, I cut the piece out of two 4″ thick pieces of upholstery foam. From there I carved the piece down using scissors, xacto knives and snap blades. I filled in a square spot on the bottom of his head by adding two more tentacles and attaching them with spray adhesive before slitting him all the way around his body about two inches deep. I traced out the body on 1/8″ microcell foam to make a pattern for the fins, which I attached into the slit cut in the body of the fish. I then covered the entire piece in two layers of latex and a layer of black Plastidip. The paint coat was a wet blend of different spray paints.

Labor Hours: Approx. 12
