First Project – Steel
Ohio University – 2017
Starting with a reference picture of a Papal Chamberlain’s sword from the 1650’s, I created a scaled design off of which I pulled the measurements for the initial pieces of rod and flat stock. With a set of chainsaw files, I created the intricate shapes of the quillons, then welded them to the headblock. The hilt ended up being five pieces: the headblock and quillons, two Dremel-etched steel blocks, a walnut handle and the pommel, which I shaped with a die grinder and another triangular chainsaw file.
