Final Project – Hand Props
Ohio University – 2017
Assigned to create a Handspring Puppet Co. style puppet, I chose to create Hazel of Watership Down. Starting with a full-scale drawing based on my research, I traced and cut each framed section out of half inch plywood. Using 5/16″ dowel and steel rod, I created each pivot section and drilled in small pieces of dowel as limiters for each joint. I laid up bass wood and cut it to shape, then hand carved the entire head and all four paws with a series of gouges. After everything was attached together, I drilled holes in the plywood frames and lashed soaked rattan into place.
